The Fairbanks Adult Amateur Baseball League has been going since the 1970s and fields eight teams out of West Valley Field on Geist Road: the Fuegos, Spruce, 49ers, Angels, Pirates, Icemen, Misfits and Wild. Rosters are drafted rather than assembled, which is the only honest way to handle a player pool where a former college arm and a man who has not swung since high school both turn up on the same Tuesday.
The league does not schedule around darkness, because for a good stretch of the summer there isn't any. Baseball played at an hour that would be absurd anywhere else is simply baseball here, and the light holds long enough that the last inning looks exactly like the first. Every other league in the country negotiates with the sunset. This one gets to ignore it for a few weeks and then pays for the privilege with eight months of not playing at all.
There is a City Series to win, an all-star game against the Alaska Goldpanners, and a state tournament to represent Fairbanks at. The league says it takes all skill levels, from rookies to former college players, and the draft is what makes that claim survive contact with a scoreboard.
