Suspended, but not stopped
The Yawkey Baseball League calls itself New England's finest amateur baseball and runs five franchises: the Al Thomas Athletics, the Brighton Black Sox, the Brighton Braves, the East Boston Knights and the McKay Club Beacons.
On 31 January 2026 it announced it was suspending league play for the 2026 season. The wording of that announcement is what makes this league unusual: during this time the league will continue to operate with the goal of returning to the field in 2027, and while games will not be played it will remain active and engaged with its community, including planning and hosting league events.
It meant it. Its Hall of Fame banquet went ahead on 9 May at a restaurant in Quincy, cocktails at six and dinner at seven, fifty dollars a seat.
A league that suspends its season and holds its banquet anyway is a league that understands what it actually is. A High Cheese league page keeps the schedule, the standings and every roster at an address the league owns -- which is what carries an organisation through a year without games and back into 2027.
