Santa Barbara MABL

Joining the Santa Barbara MABL

Register first, then try out — and being drafted is not guaranteed.

Register before you show up

The league is unusually strict and unusually honest about its entry process.

It is required that you first create an account and register for the season before you will be allowed to try out. If you show up for tryouts and have not registered, you will be required to register first.

And then the part almost nobody writes down: tryouts, creating an account and registering do not guarantee participation. Teams evaluate your skills during tryouts and draft players based on their needs. If you are not drafted you will be placed on the free agents list, where players may be contacted during the season if a team needs players -- and otherwise you are welcome to try out again the following season.

That is a league telling a man he might not get on, in advance, in plain language.

Anyone who misses the tryouts is told to make contact and the league will either find him a team or add him to the wait list.

A High Cheese join page takes the registration, feeds the tryout list and keeps the undrafted men in a pool managers can actually see mid-season -- which is the difference between a free agent list and a filing cabinet.
