Awards without numbers
The league names its MVPs alongside its champions — one man took it in consecutive seasons for the Reds — and records its Frank Coll Memorial Sportsmanship Award winners with the clubs they played for. No statistic of any kind is published for any player, in any division, in twenty-two years.
Naming an award for somebody, and then giving it to a man every year, is a league keeping faith with its own past; giving it without a line of numbers is the part that stops a son looking it up. Statistics on High Cheese come out of the box scores as they are entered and follow a player between clubs, divisions and seasons, so an MVP has the season underneath his name.
