Everything comes down to the seed
The regular season exists to set the bracket — the standings table leads with a seed column — and it feeds semi-finals and a championship game. In 2021 both semi-finals went by a single run: the Monarchs past the expansion Clowns 3-2, with the tying run on in the ninth, and the Reds past the Black Sox 3-2 to reach their first final. The league's own line was that in its most compelling season it was only fitting both games were decided by one.
An expansion club taking the two-time champions to the wire in its first year is the best possible advertisement a league can run. High Cheese builds and runs a bracket off the standings the season already produced, so the seed a twelve-game season fought over is applied the moment the last Tuesday is final.
