Boston Park League

Boston Park League History

Ted Williams and Mark McGwire hit home runs here. A governor and a mayor pitched against each other.

The things that happened on these fields

Ted Williams hit a home run in a Boston Park League exhibition in 1946. Mark McGwire hit one in 1984.

In 1941 Governor Leverett Saltonstall pitched against Mayor Maurice Tobin. Both men have a piece of Boston infrastructure named after them now, the Leverett Connector and the Tobin Bridge, and before that they faced each other in this league.

In 1973 the league brought the designated hitter into amateur baseball, ahead of most of the sport, and it was enough of a story that a New York network sent a crew.

The site keeps historical award winners, historical all-stars, historical records, a Hall of Fame and an In Memoriam section, which is more of its own past than any other league here maintains.

Every season played on High Cheese is kept the same way, so a league starting today has that record in fifty years rather than hoping somebody wrote it down.
