A 501(c)(3), and it plays like one
Lehigh Valley MABL MSBL describes itself first as a 501(c)(3) organization, which is a rarer thing than it sounds — most adult leagues are a bank account and a commissioner. It runs three age divisions with separate rulebooks for over-18 and for over-45 and over-60, publishes its bylaws, a code of conduct and its Hall of Fame criteria, holds an annual donation drive, and has just added a golf outing and awards dinner to the calendar. It recently moved its whole site off the platform it had used for years.
Being a charity changes what a league has to be able to show — donors, sponsors and a board all want a record rather than a rumour. High Cheese gives a league one address it owns carrying the schedule, the standings, every roster and the documents beside them, which for an organization that files with the IRS is the difference between an operation and a scoreboard.
