Both finalists, every season
The league records the winner and the second-place club together. The Phillies took five in a row from 2014 to 2018, losing to the Giants in 2013 first and beating the Dodgers, Mariners, Astros and Rockies along the way. The Astros followed in 2019 and 2020, then the Cardinals, then the Padres, then the Rockies three straight through 2025 — twice over the Padres, once over the Athletics.
Publishing the runner-up beside the champion is generous and rare, and it turns a list into a rivalry: the Padres have finished second four times in five years. Every season played on High Cheese keeps itself as standings, box scores and rosters together with both finalists attached to the year, so the near-misses are part of the record rather than a footnote.
