Paid when it counts
The league says paid umpires work its division series and playoff games, and lists umpire costs among the things league dues cover, alongside field rentals, baseballs, insurance, equipment and national MSBL membership.
Saying openly that the paid crew arrives for the games that decide something is honest about where a $220 fee can stretch to, and rarer than it sounds. No assignor is named and no route to working games is given; on High Cheese the crew attaches to the fixture, so an umpire sees his Sundays where the teams see theirs.
