Chelsea 7, Mad River 6, in ten
The league's president writes its championship report himself, and the 2025 final deserved it.
On a day made for baseball at the Montpelier Rec Field, Mad River Valley scored three in the top of the first. Chelsea countered with five in the bottom of the same inning. Mad River struck back with three in the top of the fifth and led 6-5 through the eighth. Chelsea tied it with one in the ninth. In the tenth, with men on, Chelsea struck the final blow with a walk-off double for a 7-6 win.
The note the league adds is the one that makes it: both starters went the distance -- David Simpson for Mad River and Brian Simoni for Chelsea, who also hit the game-winning walk-off.
A complete game in a ten-inning final, and the same man drove in the winning run. It was Chelsea's second consecutive championship.
A championship recorded on a High Cheese league page keeps the bracket, the box score and the winning roster attached to the season, so a ten-inning final is a game with numbers behind it as well as a paragraph.
