Three-Quarters of a Gold Glove Is Just Somebody’s Opinion

Baseball’s top fielding award is decided mostly by a vote, not a stat. Here’s how that compares to how adult leagues hand out their own hardware.

01 — The award

The Gold Glove is mostly a vote, with a stat attached

Baseball handed out its fielding awards Sunday night, and most of the decision came from a vote. Adult leagues pick their winners the same way. Plus: GameChanger’s new pitching view and a big international field heading to Florida.

The 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove winners were announced Nov. 1, and about 75% of each pick came from votes by MLB managers and coaches. A defensive stat index made up the other 25%. Adult baseball leagues hand out MVPs and other awards the same way, through votes by managers, which makes this a good week to check how your league picks its winners.

Rawlings announced the 2026 winners during a one-hour Baseball Tonight special on ESPN on Sunday, Nov. 1. Each team’s manager and up to six coaches voted for players in their own league, and they couldn’t vote for their own players. The SABR Defensive Index, a blend of fielding metrics published by the Society for American Baseball Research, accounts for about 25% of the selection. The coaches’ votes carry the majority.

This year’s class has 11 previous winners and nine first-time winners. Christian Walker and Matt Olson each won their fourth Gold Glove, the most among this year’s group. The Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks led all teams with three winners each, according to MLB.com. The two utility awards work differently: Rawlings picked those using a SABR formula and other defensive stats instead of the usual vote.

SABR posted its final 2026 index rankings, with the winners in bold, so anyone can compare the vote to the numbers. In the American League, Cody Bellinger led all fielders in the index at 13.8 and won in left field. In the National League, Brice Turang led at 12.8 and won at second base. Fans can vote for the Rawlings Platinum Glove, the award for the best overall defender in each league, through Nov. 5 on Rawlings.com.

If the biggest award in baseball defense still leans on opinion, an adult league’s MVP vote isn’t any less legitimate for doing the same thing.

What matters is that the method is written down and the numbers are visible.

02 — The banquet

Adult leagues pick their winners the same way

Many adult leagues use the same voting method. The Central Ohio MABL, an 18-and-over league founded in 1996, says on its site that each team’s MVP goes on the ballot for the 2026 League MVP, and the team managers vote. A first-place vote is worth 5 points, second is worth 3, and third is worth 1. The player with the most points wins. The league’s nine team MVPs make up this year’s ballot.

That system is simple and clear, but it depends entirely on what managers saw. Big-league voters have the SABR index next to their ballots. Most adult league voters have only the box scores their own scorekeepers entered, and errors and fielding stats in amateur scorebooks are judgment calls by whoever was holding the book.

League officers who publish a written awards method, with a points system, a voter list and any stats voters can see, will face fewer arguments at the banquet.

A season’s worth of consistent stats is the closest thing an adult league has to its own defensive index.

03 — The scorebook

GameChanger puts pitching trends on the web

GameChanger’s What’s New page, updated Nov. 1, lists a new pitching breakdown for coaches on the web. A game’s “Insights” tab now shows inning-by-inning trends in strike percentage, first-pitch strike percentage and velocity. GameChanger says that makes it easier to spot fatigue than reading game totals in a stat table.

The same roundup lists two other changes. On iOS, quick pitch buttons now give haptic feedback, because scorekeepers sometimes missed a tap or double-tapped and logged a pitch twice. And team stats are now visible on the web to non-staff followers who have a Premium subscription.

Adult league managers juggling short pitching staffs get a quicker way to see when an arm is fading.

The haptic fix also targets one of the most common sources of bad box scores, which feed everything from pitch limits to season awards.

04 — The tournament

A big international field heads to Florida this week

The MSBL Fall Classic opens Nov. 7 in Jupiter and West Palm Beach, with week one covering the 18+, 28+, 45+ and 55+ divisions through Nov. 14. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission said Oct. 30 that more than 125 teams and over 2,000 athletes are expected over two weeks. Teams are coming from the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Peru, and games will be played at sites including CACTI Park of The Palm Beaches and Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Tournaments of this size draw players from several countries, which tests how teams handle travel, rosters, and keeping in touch with each other.

The local sports commission also treats the event as a tourism draw, which shows how much adult baseball can matter to a host county.

05 — Quick hits

Also this week

Platinum Glove voting closes Nov. 5. Fan voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove is open on Rawlings.com through Thursday, Rawlings said.

The index behind the award has been around since 2013. SABR says its Defensive Index has helped pick Gold Glove winners since 2013, and it combines batted-ball location data and play-by-play metrics from sources including Statcast, Sports Info Solutions and STATS Perform.

06 — Frequently asked

What people are asking

How are Gold Glove winners chosen?

MLB managers and up to six coaches per team vote for players in their own league, and they can’t vote for their own team. That vote makes up about 75% of the result. The SABR Defensive Index, a combined fielding metric, makes up the other 25%.

Who won the most Gold Gloves in 2026?

Christian Walker and Matt Olson each won their fourth career Gold Glove, the most among 2026 winners. The Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks had the most winners of any team, with three each.

How do adult baseball leagues pick their MVP?

Many use a manager vote. The Central Ohio MABL, for example, puts each team’s MVP on a ballot, and managers vote with 5 points for first place, 3 for second and 1 for third. The player with the most points wins.
