The World Champs’ Lucky Charm Would Get You Tossed in Men’s League

The champion Brewers’ pregame ritual was a lit cigarette in the batting cage. In some adult baseball leagues, doing that in the dugout ends your day.

01 — The ritual

The Brewers won the World Series on “rally heaters”

The Brewers lit cigarettes in the batting cage before every World Series game. Here’s what adult league rulebooks say about that, plus Mexico’s new pitch clock and a push to recruit umpires.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ World Series title came with a strange pregame ritual: hitters lit cigarettes in the batting cage, which they called “rally heaters.” Jeff Passan of ESPN reported it Oct. 29 and followed up Oct. 31, and it has been all over X since. Some adult baseball leagues ban smoking on the field and in the dugout, and at least one pulls you from the game on the spot.

Milwaukee’s hitters lit cigarettes in the batting cage before every game during their World Series run, Passan reported in ESPN’s inside story of the title (TSN reprint). The logic was simple: “If they smoke heaters in the cage, they’ll smoke heaters in the game.” Christian Yelich described it this way: “You walk by the cage and see the cigs lit… the boys are ready to rock.”

ESPN said the Brewers hit .278 with a .742 OPS against fastballs in the World Series. The Rays hit .159 against fastballs, with a .395 OPS. The ritual kept going after the clincher: ESPN reported that players lit up on the team bus around 2:10 AM after Game 5. The New York Post noted that Guardians players also smoked after clinching the AL Central last season. On Oct. 31, Passan posted a video follow-up on X that was dedicated to the ritual.

This is the most-shared clubhouse story of the offseason, and adult players will try to copy it.

Before anyone brings a pack to Sunday’s doubleheader, they should know what their league’s rulebook says.

02 — The rulebooks

Some adult leagues pull you for lighting up in the dugout

The Boston MSBL 28+ rules say no player shall “smoke on the field of play or in the dugout.” Rule 7.01(g) says players who do “shall be immediately suspended from further participation in the game.” A further violation after a game suspension can mean a suspension for the rest of the season, under rule 7.02(d).

The Carolina Men’s Baseball League’s 2026 rules say “Smoking and smokeless tobacco are prohibited on the field and in the dugouts.” That league’s Rule 3.B adds that the rules of the government entities providing its fields apply and control in any conflict. Those include New Hanover County, Wilmington, Jacksonville and Pender County parks departments.

The big leagues have their own limits. Tobacco-Free Baseball, a campaign that focuses mostly on smokeless tobacco, lists Milwaukee and St. Petersburg, home of Tropicana Field, among the MLB cities with tobacco-free stadium laws. High Cheese found no report that the Brewers were penalized for the ritual. ESPN placed it in the batting cage, not the dugout.

In adult baseball, the park’s rules usually override the league’s.

If the city or county that permits your field bans tobacco, a lit cigarette in the dugout can cost your league its permit, not just cost you an at-bat.

03 — Winter ball

Mexico’s winter league now plays with a pitch clock and ABS challenges

The Liga Mexicana del Pacífico, now called LMP Banamex after a new title sponsor, opened its 2026-27 season Oct. 13 with a pitch clock for the first time, Luz Noticias reported. The clock gives pitchers 15 seconds with the bases empty and 20 with runners on. Batters must be ready with 8 seconds left. The league also added ABS ball-strike challenges, two per team per game, plus a third in extra innings if neither was used; a limit of two pickoff throws, with a third that doesn’t get an out called a balk; a three-batter minimum for relievers; and limits on defensive shifts.

The opener, Charros de Jalisco 8, Jaguares de Nayarit 5, took 2 hours 50 minutes despite 13 runs and 20 hits, Excélsior reported. “Baseball isn’t measured in time,” league president Salvador Escobar told Excélsior. “It’s measured in data, in intelligence, in strategic decisions.”

The league’s returning Mayos de Navojoa still can’t play at home. Their series against Mexicali, Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, was moved to Ciudad Obregón because the renovated Estadio Manuel “Ciclón” Echeverría hadn’t yet passed inspections, El Imparcial reported Oct. 27. The stadium must be approved by the league presidency in coordination with MLB, and by state and municipal civil-protection authorities. No new reopening date has been set.

Winter ball is where many amateur and former pro players watch baseball from November to January.

Pitch clocks and ball-strike challenges are now standard there, not just in MLB. The Navojoa delay also shows what happens when a field isn’t approved in time: the schedule moves, whatever the fans were promised.

04 — The umpires

A Pennsylvania 82-year-old is trying to build an umpire pipeline

Bill Keough, an 82-year-old official in Ferguson Township, Pennsylvania, is proposing a Sports Officials Training Academy for Centre County, the Centre County Gazette reported Oct. 26. Keough said he was still umpiring three or four nights a week at 78 because demand was so high. The academy would focus on officials for high school and recreational programs. It would run about 10 to 15 weeks, with roughly 30% of the time spent across sports on communication, game management and handling difficult spectators and coaches.

“We can’t just go on a skeleton crew anymore,” said Josh Portney, a baseball umpire working with Keough. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) says it has passed 15,000 registered officials for the first time, but regional shortages persist.

Adult leagues compete with high school and youth programs for the same small pool of umpires.

A local academy that recruits newcomers and teaches them how to handle conflict is a model any league could sponsor or partner with.

06 — Frequently asked

What people are asking

What are the Brewers’ “rally heaters”?

“Rally heaters” are cigarettes Milwaukee Brewers hitters lit in the batting cage before games during their 2026 World Series run, as a good-luck ritual tied to hitting fastballs, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported.

Can you smoke in the dugout in adult baseball?

Not in many leagues. Boston MSBL rules ban smoking on the field or in the dugout and immediately remove violators from the game, and the Carolina Men’s Baseball League bans smoking and smokeless tobacco on the field and in dugouts.

Does the Mexican Pacific League use a pitch clock?

Yes. Starting with the 2026-27 season, the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico uses a 15-second clock with the bases empty and 20 seconds with runners on, plus two ABS ball-strike challenges per team per game.
