Twenty-two to thirty

The Alexandria Black Sox publish a roster with jersey numbers, positions, ages, bats and throws, school and experience level. The ages run from twenty-two to thirty.

That is a narrow band, and a telling one. No high school players and nobody past thirty: this is a Class A roster built out of men who finished a college program and were not ready to stop.

None of it is reproduced here. A published roster is real people from Alexandria with their ages and schools attached, and it is theirs rather than ours.
